Xiegu G1M

I got this from a fellow ham that gave it to me. It had a few issues, but most notably the headphone jack stopped working and some unknown SMD component flew off when attempting to troubleshoot the issue. This radio was sitting for a while and I made some attempts at trying to find the missing component, but never really tried to use it much.

I was making a trip to Puerto Rico recently, and decided to bring it out of the box it was stowed away in considering that the bigger HF units would be a nightmare to get through TSA … and more importantly, carry. After a couple of days of probing with a multi-meter and trying to build cables for a second DigiRig that I own I finally figured out that both noted issues were related. The speaker jack output would work if you pushed it completely to one sideand somehow it would start working, but if you didn’t put pressure on it it would not work. Turns out, the real issue was the missing component. The missing component was a small decoupling capacitor on the ground of the 3.5mm jack and why the speaker wasn’t working. After this was done I had a fully working G1M.

I have run this thing in Puerto Rico like it owed me money – and along with a small OGS 50W amplifier I managed to make many contacts across the eastern and central parts of the USA from KP4 territory both SSB and FT8.
